All ads should invoke your sense of humor…. prove me wrong.

I’m thinking of leaving my current job in sales to pursue something in marketing.

I wish to do this for two reasons. One is because I believe something should bring a smile to peoples face through out the day; and what we see more than basically anything else during our days are advertisements.

Secondly I think I might possibly be good at it. But I have no idea… so seriously someone prove me wrong.

Currently I work in pharmaceuticals, which many of you know have some of the worst advertisements out there. Of course that isn’t their fault, they are required by the FDA to inform everyone of the potential side effects of their drugs and thats good! However, the ads are redundant and frankly boring, even for someone who can use the medication.

One ad that I remember specifically was for a bladder medication, and though it wasn’t funny necessarily, it was relatable and understandable; even though I don’t have bladder problems or even know if this is a good medication.

Any one remember this ad? Does anyone agree that was relatable and somewhat relaxed when addressing the actual problem? If not thats fine and just tell me; but what’s a good way to advertise diseases that are already depressing the people that have them anyway?

I mean there are so many things that advertisement agencies tackle, not just pharmaceuticals but some light hearted topics like Kit-Kat bars (which I’m still convinced need and ad with Rachel and Ross from friends) or some dangerous topics like avoiding illegal activity (someone getting fleas any time they do something illegal) or just basic things, like store advertisements (IKEA had a great one a few years ago).

Just we are seeing advertisements every day, shouldn’t they make us smile? We have enough going on in or own worlds that make us frown. Now I’m not saying every advertisement is out there making people unhappy. Of course there are great advertisements, but I know we’ve all seen the Sarah McLahlan advertisement for SPCA, and please raise your hand if you physically get up and walk out during so that when the actual programming continues you aren’t sitting there in tears.

Or the ads you see in all the subways, how often do they make you smile?

I’m just saying, all ads should appeal to our since of humor in some way, and if you don’t think so, let me know.

Until then, I’m just leaving this here.
