A conversation thats come up more then once for me…
Will Trump win again?
The last election we were all sitting on the edge of our seats, mesmerized, watching as PA turned red, then Ohio; our faces aghast. My republican boyfriend on the phone jeering “told you he’d win. I told you”.
I think I hung up, or just stopped talking… I don’t know, but either way, when I woke up the next day in Washington D.C, Trump was president, and I’m not kidding when I tell you people were worried about being bombed. We were holding meetings at the Marriott in crystal city, where construction was taking place next door. A very bad scenario for some people; who after every loud bang could be found under their desk, shaking with fear.
So just yesterday I was on the boat with family an friends, and inevitably, politics came up. Why is this an issue everywhere we go? Why when I invite a boy over to the house, or go over to his, the sentence before we enter the foray is “oh and don’t bring up politics”.
I’m not kidding! Its even on craigslist now! Trying to find a room? Make sure you read all the advertisement because usually at the bottom you’ll see “Republicans please don’t apply”, or “Democrats discouraged”.
I digress however, the main point is that it came up at a gathering of family and friends, as it’s bound to, and I (because I am young and naive and proud to be so) said “well I think you’ll see a lot more people show up for this election then the last one”.
The man I said this to laughed. “No you won’t” he snickered. “young people don’t vote. They never vote, and they never will”.
Am I that naive? I’ve talked to so many people my age; so many opinionated people who are willing and able to voice our opinions. We for one are the generation with school debt. The generation with car loans, and the generation who can’t afford houses. We aren’t getting married at 23 (the majority of us), and we aren’t having kids (we think they are a burden right now… we’ll change our minds in our 30’s).
We are different. As is every generation. But I bet 50 years ago you couldn’t open your phone and see where exactly your friend in England was, and what they were doing (Snapchat’s map does that now). Or listen to two different podcasts a day with two different opinions. Or organize a “GoFundMe” page on facebook and in three weeks get $10,000.
Everything’s different. And from every person I’ve talked to, they know it, and they are willing and able to do something about. In fact they encourage me to do something about it.
So what will the 2020 elections look like? Well hell I don’t know! I think the people who voted for Trump will continue to vote for Trump, because that’s their opinion and that’s who they want.
However, I think the generations who grew up with smart phones and internet (internet that doesn’t make a funny noise when you start it up) will also, for one of the first times, make an appearance. Because honestly, we don’t know what an economy is, we don’t know how to monitor the stocks, and we don’t know anything about how the electoral college works… but we do know a picture of Kim Kardashian and Trump went viral…. and we hate Kim Kardashian.
Ok thats not the only reason why… but we all took that picture in to the full extent. There are multiple of other reasons.
But really… Kim Kardashian?
